I ask the noble and learned Lord who is the sponsor to think again about the suitability of the Mental Capacity Act. We have heard alternative proposals from two very learned consultant doctors, one in palliative care and the other in psychiatry, which would offer a substitute. I think that “autonomy” is misused in this sense—it is not the proper, only and clear useful sense of the word. I also wonder, in this vein, whether the word “choice” is being misused, if the choice of self-destruction is being foisted on someone who is in no position to choose.
