Secondly, bed shortages and bed-blocking pressures create incentives. Policy focus on delayed transfers of care has driven a culture whereby freeing hospital beds is a priority. We all understand that, but that dynamic can translate into pressure to move people through pathways quickly. An assisted dying service that promises speed could, in practice, become the option of least resistance for overstretched systems.
