We all understand the humane impulse behind assisted dying, and it is understandable, but we must not legislate in a way that substitutes legal convenience for investment in care. My amendment would not obstruct compassion; it would strengthen the Bill’s safeguards where they are most needed. It would require multidisciplinary review, explicit consideration and treatment of reversible causes, a short statutory timeframe and an audit trail for delays. Those protections would reduce the risk that system pressures, workforce shortages or administrative convenience will shape life-ending decisions.
