Representation of the People BillContribution
As initially introduced, the Bill proposes a significant control test to help to ensure that companies and LLPs donating to political parties are majority-owned or controlled by UK electors or citizens. Further amendments have been tabled to make targeted improvements to the operation of that test. In particular, they address cases involving trusts and firms to ensure that the test functions as intended and that political parties can take account of the information held by Companies House relating to unconfirmed persons with significant control. Taken together, these amendments strengthen the coherence of the Bill’s political finance regime by ensuring that the new safeguards apply consistently, close loopholes and improve transparency.
