This is a relatively new trend. The share of private political donations coming from individuals and companies who are giving £1 million or more has surged from just 1% in 2015 to over a third of donations in under a decade. We also have an election spending arms race that we have never seen before. In the last election, we spent £90 million—the most in modern history, and nearly 80% more than was spent in 2015. That is why I support the call of my right hon. Friend the Member for Oxford East (Anneliese Dodds) for a reduction in the spending cap.
