Representation of the People BillContribution
There are those in other political parties who may not have looked at the litany of legislation and regulation that already guides trade unions. That is why new clause 120 would completely exempt trade unions from these measures. They are already well regulated when it comes to how they donate. That is why it is clean money. There is something fundamental here about why we should back these changes and a UK cap—it is for our trade unions, because the unions are the voice of the people against the interests of capital. Six million voices will be drowned out by a single daily donation of £6 million if we do not act. That voice and that balance in our political system is at risk if we do not address this distortion. We cannot ignore the impact that could have on our trade union movement, and on our ability to ensure that everybody is heard in our political system.
