In 2007, the Phillips review collapsed over this dilemma, despite major donors, including David Sainsbury, supporting a cap on donations. With hindsight, we can see that that opened the door to the crisis we face. We know why the unions give. It is to represent their members’ interests. The real question that I keep coming back to is: why do the millionaires give so much? Perhaps we should take a lesson from that well known source, President Trump. Before he became President, he said,
