Representation of the People BillContribution
My new clause 69 would introduce a £1 million cap on individual donors in a single calendar year. This very timid amendment is a safeguard to prevent the ultra-wealthy from thinking that they can come and buy our elections wholesale. As per the excellent Rycroft review, which I was absolutely delighted to contribute to, we cannot have election-distorting behaviour by the ultra-rich. In 2025, there was £12 million-worth of donations from just one person to Reform UK. Ten years ago, 1% of political donations came from millionaires; today, it is more than a third. Our politics is being bought in front of our eyes. A third of political donations come from individuals. What is free and fair about that? I welcome spending limits and foreign donor regulation.
