Representation of the People BillContribution
Let me turn to those who engaged with the substance of the Bill. Several hon. Members, including my hon. Friend the Member for Walthamstow (Ms Creasy), have sought to reduce the influence of large donations on our politics by proposing an annual cap on donations, including domestic donations. The Bill already contains a package of significant measures designed to strengthen the political finance regime while ensuring that legitimate donors can continue to fund election campaigns. The Secretary of State and the Prime Minister are determined to tackle the UK-based issue of mega-donors in UK politics, as the Prime Minister outlined yesterday. That is why I am happy to announce that the new cross-Government task and finish team will be working at pace to find a solution without unintended consequences. I can reassure Members that once those solutions have been found, we will want them in force as soon as possible.
