Armed Forces Bill

Contribution

Reservists already benefit from a range of statutory protections under the Reserve Forces Act 1996 and the Reserve Forces (Safeguard of Employment) Act 1985. For example, the Reserve Forces (Call-out and Recall) (Financial Assistance) Regulations 2005, made under the Reserve Forces Act 1996, help ensure that reservists are not financially disadvantaged when mobilised. Alongside that statutory framework, our voluntary arrangements allow defence to recognise and build on good practice, while sustaining the positive relationships with employers on which reserve service depends. Defence will continue to encourage employers to adopt supportive policies and provide time off for reserve training. However, we consider that this is best achieved through engagement, recognition and partnership. That was another point that the noble Lord, Lord De Mauley, made well. In answer to the noble Baroness, Lady Smith, we keep the legislation that governs our Reserve Forces under regular review. If we believe that further change is required to improve the readiness of the Reserve Forces, we will look to include it in future legislation.
