I should be clear that my amendment is something of a compromise because, as has been said, the preferred position on these Benches would be to leave the ECHR altogether. This is not a debate for tonight and is clearly not in scope of this Bill. It is not going to happen until we have a change of Government. Given that, I believe that my amendment is the only solution to prevent a potential calamitous wrong that demands to be put right. I am, of course, talking about the appalling vexatious legal claims, based largely on creative interpretations of human rights law, made against our veterans and serving soldiers. Such claims have led to brave members of our Armed Forces being sued by lawyers, hounded by journalists and hauled through the courts. In many cases, the torment lasted for years.
