Public Office (Accountability) Bill

Finally, I will refer to Hillsborough. During the Hillsborough inquiry, I was appalled to learn many things that had been concealed. One of the most shocking was about the police officers who had been told to change the accounts in their own notebooks about the things that they had seen. I know that the Minister shares my indignation about what happened to the families at that time. It should be mandatory to see evidence of that kind, as the noble Baroness, Lady Brinton, said. I found it extraordinary that an inquiry was needed to find out about correspondence that had passed between the independent police investigative commissioner and the police force in South Yorkshire, and that Members of Parliament could be referred to in derogatory ways for interfering when trying to establish the cause of what had occurred. That should never happen. To conceal that, and for that not to be made available until these matters finally come out in a public inquiry, should not be the order of the day.
