Public Office (Accountability) Bill

Contribution

I suggest that these amendments promote truth without sacrificing justice. If the Bill is to achieve its purpose, the duty of candour must be a genuine duty and not one that can be avoided whenever disclosure becomes uncomfortable or inconvenient. At the same time, Parliament should not require self-incrimination without providing appropriate safeguards. These amendments achieve that balance. They are principled, measured, consistent with established statutory precedents and essential to the effective operation of the duty of candour. I therefore commend them to the Committee.
