Public Office (Accountability) BillContribution
The Government should think carefully. That is why I support the amendment tabled by our Front Bench about the guidance. It will be key to what officials should or should not do, thinking this through and how it relates to other Acts of Parliament. It is so complicated that it gets away from the origins of how parts of this came about: the Hillsborough disaster. I grew up in Liverpool and was in school there at that time. It impacted the city, but more broadly than that it made sure that there was a reduction in trust in the people we should trust: the police and other officials. Getting into this very important Bill from where it started off, how we cover all these different ways of making sure freedom of speech is protected while balancing what we consider to be reckless or seriously improper will be critical.
