Baroness Coffey (Con)

Speaking in the House of Lords on 12 October 2026

Debate

Public Office (Accountability) Bill

Contribution

My Lords, we are allowed to speak twice in Committee. I was slightly disappointed that the concerns I raised were brushed away and linked with something to do with parliamentary privilege. I do not understand why the Government have decided that an ethical conduct code is not required by the Houses of Parliament or others. I also did not get an answer to the question about the Prime Minister’s declaration on interference—not attempted interference—in the Brexit referendum. The Minister mentioned writing to people with answers to questions raised in this debate. I would be grateful if he made sure that those letters go into the Library, and if he would say that he will do that, so that all Members of the House can understand where the Government are taking the Bill.
