Public Office (Accountability) Bill

Contribution

I hope that the Government recognise the advantages of giving the bereaved agency. If the Hillsborough Family Support Group could be replicated for significant numbers of the victims and bereaved in future public disasters like Hillsborough, so they could act collectively, that would deal with some of the problems of costs and delay that could well inadvertently flow from this Bill. It could, for example, reduce the number of lawyers that would be involved; quite apart from reducing the cost to taxpayers, which could run into hundreds of millions of pounds, it could help to produce a co-ordinated response from the victims of state failure, which would reduce delays in reaching resolution of the issues that would flow from that failure—and that matters.
