Public Office (Accountability) BillContribution
As I have said previously during the passage of this Bill through your Lordships’ House, the interests of victims and the bereaved must be kept front and centre in the aftermath of state failure, and those interests can perhaps be summarised as: finding the truth about what happened and why, to find it quickly, and for accountability then to follow without delay. Without that, it is hard for them to find any kind of closure, and that must be a priority. The Independent Public Advocate is uniquely well placed to help bring about that collective endeavour, although the amendment makes it clear that this would be only with the support of the majority of the victims and the Secretary of State.
