Debate

Public Office (Accountability) Bill

Contribution

My Lords, I can be brief as my noble friend Lady Sanderson of Welton made a clear and persuasive case for progress on strengthening the role of the Independent Public Advocate. I know the Minister has already expressed some sympathy for the inclusion of a role for the Independent Public Advocate in the Bill. The key point is that we should get to the truth as quickly and as efficiently as possible, without, we hope, the need for costly and long-winded inquiries when they are not needed. As I understand it, that principle underpins all the amendments in this group. I look forward to the Government taking this issue away and coming back with what I hope will be a workable proposal. This was discussed at Second Reading. The Government now face the formidable triumvirate, if you can have a triumvirate where two-thirds are women—I think you probably can—of my noble friends Lady May of Maidenhead and Lady Sanderson of Welton and the noble Lord, Lord Wills. I therefore look forward to the Minister, who has shown willing on this point, engaging with them and others in the hope that we can get to a reasonable position on this important issue.
