Debate

Public Office (Accountability) Bill

Contribution

My Lords, I would like to thank all noble Lords who have spoken in this debate. It was remiss of me not to thank the Minister earlier for all the time he gave us over the Recess, for which we are very grateful. I am not going to detain the Committee; the noble Lord, Lord Roe of West Wickham, who has so much experience, kept his remarks brief, so I feel duty bound to keep my remarks brief. I am just going to say that it is slightly disappointing, because I feel that we are going back to the comments that we heard two years ago on the then Victims and Prisoners Bill, which is that the IPA is fine and is essentially a signposting role. Actually, it is more than that, it can be more than that and it should be more than that in the context of this Bill. All the amendments that we have heard today have shown just how central the IPA is to how this Bill is going to work on the ground as the only person representative of the people affected. So, if the Minister is willing, there are more discussions to be had before we potentially bring this back on Report, but until then I beg leave to withdraw my amendment.
