Robert Hamill Inquiry Report

Contribution

The noble Lord is aware, not least because he wore a uniform too, that terrorists killed over 3,000 people during the Troubles. Each of the victims and their families deserve answers, whether they are military families or otherwise. That is one of the reasons why the previous Government established ICRIR, and it is why we are reforming and strengthening it to become the legacy commission, so that people can get answers where they need them from specialists who can investigate. I am not sure whether any of the victims of Enniskillen or their families have gone forward to the commission yet, but there have been others, including from Kingsmill, who have. As I said in response to the Opposition Front Benches, there is not a day when there is not someone grieving in Northern Ireland about what happened to them or their families. There is not a day when there is not heartbreak and horror about the Troubles. The responsibility on all of us as UK parliamentarians is to try to facilitate structures where people can get the answers that they need. I hope we will be able do that through the strengthening of the legacy commission.
