Railways Bill

Finally, it is worth the Government thinking, in how they talk about this subject, about reinforcing for the public why they should care about this. It is clear that in the first instance, people immediately think about passenger services. But there cannot be very many people in the country who do not use something that is moved by rail freight, whether that is the disposal of waste, which they clearly welcome, moving energy supplies to power generation, or moving either new construction materials or waste from construction projects off the roads, thus reducing the congestion, noise and inconvenience to the public. All those are reasons why the public should care about rail freight.
