Railways Bill

Contribution

The noble Lord, in saying that, might like to look at the cost that road travel imposes on all of us in terms of air pollution, noise and the cost of maintenance of those roads. Those costs are borne by all of us. Indeed, with the comparative measures that have happened over the past couple of decades, we have seen car travel transport costs, in real terms, go up far less than rail transport costs have gone up. That is the historical reality. I have no doubt that my noble friend Lady Jones will want to look very closely at what the Minister has said. I am afraid that I do not think that we have got to where we need to be, particularly on climate, nature and affordability. In the meantime, however, I beg leave to withdraw the amendment.
