Crime and Policing BillContribution
The other provision in Amendment 458 concerns babies born alive after attempted abortions. It is not easy to speak about babies being born alive after an attempted abortion; it is a subject that arouses sorrow, discomfort and, in some cases, disbelief. But however rare such events may be, they do happen. They are documented in medical literature, coroners’ reports and the accounts of midwives and neonatal nurses, whose courage we should commend. What becomes of such a child? Does he or she receive comfort or resuscitation, or are they left without medical intervention? We are entitled to know.
