Courts and Tribunals BillContribution
There remains a strong case for judge-alone trials in the small number of cases that pertain to complex and lengthy fraud and financial matters. I can confirm to the House that we will proceed with this measure, which has had strong support from those responsible for investigating and prosecuting serious economic crime. Our primary objective here is to minimise the burden on ordinary people, who sit as jurors on such trials. We know that these trials can be lengthy, often lasting months at a time, which can mean long periods away from work and family responsibilities, lost income and real pressure on family life.
