Courts and Tribunals Bill

Contribution

I have therefore tabled amendment 70, which is based on a recommendation by the Committee that would require the Government to increase the legal aid thresholds in the magistrates court before the removal of the right to elect can be implemented. I urge the Minister to consider giving us that commitment today. Otherwise, the House is being asked to double the sentencing powers of magistrates and remove the right to elect without any reassurances that defendants who cannot afford to pay privately will be legally represented.
