At such a stage of gestation, surely the law’s interest cannot lie solely in the choices of the woman. It must acknowledge the parallel interest in the life of a viable child. Parliament routinely balances competing interests in other contexts. There comes a point where even the most ardent supporter of abortion must recognise the interests of an unborn child who is in every practical sense a child awaiting delivery. That must matter as well. And I speak not as a Catholic but as someone who supports abortion. As it stands, Clause 191 crosses a line that should never be crossed and entirely disregards the life of a full-term child.
