Unlike the Commons, we have the benefit of two specialist committees—the Delegated Powers Committee and the Constitution Committee. The Commons should be as concerned about the delegated powers as the Lords is, because, not to put too fine a point on it, the delegated powers are the powers that the Government take from Parliament. It has been so bad in recent years that two committees of this House produced reports, one titled Democracy Denied? and the other Government by Diktat. Both reports were debated in 2023. My noble friend the Whip is not in his place, which is fortunate because what was said in that debate by people who are now on the Government Front Bench would be quite embarrassing if they were reminded of it today.
