Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
The Committee will be aware of the recent revelations of the Omagh bombing inquiry, as reported by BBC Northern Ireland on 12 October 2026, that an Irish army camp received a warning that the town was to be the target of a bomb the day before the fatal explosion. We now know that a call was received on the eve of the bombing at Finner camp near Ballyshannon in County Donegal, and that the caller told the soldiers to check the back routes or back roads, and then repeated three times, “Omagh, Omagh, Omagh.” However, it would appear that, tragically, this warning was not passed on by the Irish authorities, and the bombing then took place the following day. I imagine that a number of right hon. and hon. Members will want to refer to this tragedy during the course of the debate, but I mention it at this juncture as an example of exactly the kind of atrocity that our troops were deployed to Northern Ireland to seek to prevent.
