Northern Ireland Troubles Bill

Contribution

For those reasons, the veteran community fear that they have now become pawns in a wider game to appease Dublin; they are not fooled in any way. The Secretary of State would be naive beyond belief if he felt that, were this Bill to become law, the Irish Government in Dublin, who turned a blind eye to terrorist acts for decades north of the border, would somehow become a willing witness, and would open all their files to allow families to seek the truth. We Conservative Members are not taken in by that; neither, it must be said, are the veterans, who know well that their former adversaries are determined to rewrite the history of the troubles—even, in some cases, more than half a century on. The SAS motto is “Who Dares Wins”. If we never dare, we may not win when we have to.
