Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
How often have we heard Secretaries of State, past and present, say, “The last legacy Act commanded no support from any party in Northern Ireland”? Well, here we have an amendment that is supported by the Democratic Unionist party, the Ulster Unionist party, an independent Unionist, a traditional Unionist and an Alliance Member—I hope that I can add the Social Democratic and Labour party. We have unanimity among the Northern Ireland political parties, at least those represented in this Chamber, all of whom can see the practical and compassionate benefits to agreeing with amendment 23. They all recognise that we cannot allow the pain to continue in this case: the biggest single atrocity. That is not to put it above any other, but we certainly must recognise that, unless amendment 23 is agreed to, it will not be considered where others will.
