Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
I will speak in support of amendment 103, tabled by my hon. Friend the Member for Wimbledon (Mr Kohler). Quite simply, it seeks to establish that where a case has already been investigated at an inquest, the director of investigations cannot reopen it unless “materially new evidence” has come to light. To be clear from the outset, speaking as a former soldier, anyone who wears our country’s uniform and commits war crimes should of course be prosecuted. Those standards, and that adherence to the rule of law, are what makes our armed forces the best in the world.
