Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
It is really important that we say this out loud. Families were stained for years; people said, “Oh, there’s got to be something there; they must have been killed because they were in the IRA. Oh, they were Catholic? Okay, well, something else must have gone on.” Actually, nothing other than a sectarian murder had taken place, and the slurs and the cover-up hurt even more. I sat in court in Belfast in the opening days of the Ballymurphy inquest; never more in my life did I understand where people were coming from whenever they said, “Whatever happens, this is about correcting the public record.”
