Northern Ireland Troubles Bill

Contribution

Above all, it starts with us. We politicians need to step up and model relational humility—to be willing to forgive, and to ask for forgiveness. The missing ingredient in dealing with the legacy of the troubles is summed up in one word: sorry. Even if we have played no direct part in the troubles, the roles we play as political leaders give us a responsibility and an opportunity to lead by example. So, for my part, as little as it may mean, as a British parliamentarian, I am sorry for the times when the British Parliament has made things more difficult for the people of Northern Ireland. I am sorry if there have been times when my rhetoric or misunderstanding has hurt colleagues in the cause of peace.
