Northern Ireland Troubles Bill

Contribution

New clause 56 asks the Government to apply the principle embodied in the Hillsborough law to proceedings under the Bill, and I urge Ministers to accept it. I also urge them to listen to wider concerns raised by families and their representatives. We were elected to repair the damage caused by the legacy Act. We must deliver legislation that earns the confidence of those who suffered that damage. These families have waited decades. Many have lost parents and grandparents who died without the answers they deserved. They should not spend the rest of their lives fighting for what the state should have provided a long time ago: truth, justice and accountability. Those are not unreasonable demands. They are the very least that bereaved families are entitled to expect.
