Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
The practicality now is making sure that we still have those records, so that people can get the information they need. The processes need to be in place so that the commission body, the commissioners and the investigators can get that quality information. Operation Kenova showed that being able to work with the highest level of information was the important factor. That information was what the families found to be helpful, because an absence of information is when paranoia builds and assumptions get made. One of the most important aspects is being able to have that trust in investigators, so that the families have somebody who they can go to and say, “I have heard this—is this true? Can you verify that?” Sunlight is often the best disinfectant. The benefits of Kenova and the Kenova approach have come through loud and clear in our work on the Select Committee.
