Northern Ireland Troubles Bill

Contribution

I also think of young Stuart Montgomery, a police officer. His dad was Billy Montgomery, a councillor in our party who represented Comber. I knew Billy very well, and I remember him saying to me one day, “Jim, every morning when I wake up, I think of young Stuart, and when I go to bed at night, I think of Stuart.” Stuart was killed by the IRA in Pomeroy. No justice. So I ask myself this question: where does it end? It is a theme of mine: victims, and justice never delivered. There is no equivalence between their murder and the actions that they took. They were protecting life. If this is not enshrined in the Bill, the Bill fails. I am very keen to get an assurance from the Secretary of State and from the Government in relation to the victims—those who served in uniform, those who gave their life, and those who seek justice today.
