Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
When it comes to accountability, I very much want to see the Republic of Ireland sharing information with the authorities here. The Secretary of State tells us that a framework has been agreed, but I stand to be convinced of that, in relation to what the Republic of Ireland has done in giving sanctuary to those who crossed the border. In relation to the Omagh bomb, what mechanism is in place to ensure that Ireland stops hiding the perpetrators and hands over all the information that it holds? Other than our getting access to all historical documentation from the Irish intelligence sector and the Garda Síochána, there is no reason that the Republic of Ireland should be involved at all, as it has no role in the governance of Northern Ireland. What is it doing, and where is the assurance from the Republic of Ireland that those who have carried out crimes and crossed the border will be held accountable?
