Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
I know the Secretary of State also has to deal with the Irish and the commitments that have been made to them—I do not underestimate those problems—but Dublin has responsibilities as well. If this process is going to have credibility, co-operation and access to information cannot run in one direction. I am yet to be convinced that Dublin will open its archives to expose the 30 years of cross-border activity that has taken place. I resigned from the Government in part because I could not support where we had got to on legacy. I did not do that lightly, and I have not changed my views simply because I now sit on this Back Bench rather than the Front Bench. I want the Government to get this right, and they should put these remaining inquests into the same system, keep the evidence and work that has already been done, and let the commission follow the evidence wherever it goes.
