Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
I want it to be known and I want it to be on the official record that some seriously insidious and disgusting things went on across all sides, and that includes the Government. That is uncomfortable to hear—and it is uncomfortable for me to say. I am going to use the allegory of Loughgall that the right hon. Member for Goole and Pocklington referred to. It was this part of the piece. IRA men arrive up, wanting to take life and to murder those who were serving the state to stand against the terrorists—I think most Members in the Chamber can agree that what they were trying to do was to stop terrorism—but here is where that allegory becomes extremely complicated and where I think we need to have a process and inquests and inquiries: there was one innocent civilian murdered in that operation and his name was Anthony Hughes.
