Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
That situation was replicated right across Northern Ireland. It is not black and white; it is shades of grey. That feeds into why I oppose the role of the AG in this process. What we can do for all citizens—every single person—is make sure that the law itself is our servant and that it serves everybody. It is a well-known fact—it should not be controversial to say it in this place—that, frankly, some members of previous Governments tarnished the justice system and made attempts to do shoddy side deals, which is why there was the issue of making sure that it was absolutely beyond all doubt that the on-the-run letters were null and void. That was an injustice to the court of public opinion that needed correcting, and I really appreciate the Government working with me on that, and with other hon. Members who had sought to make the same point.
