Northern Ireland Troubles BillContribution
I pay tribute not only to our armed forces, and the 300,000 who served under Operation Banner, but the families of those who were killed in active service, defending our peace. Along with all hon. Members in this House, I say: thank you for your service. I pay tribute to the other families who lost people—those who have struggled for justice over the years, and those who have stored their pain in their heart without any complaint. To them, too, I say: thank you for your service, because that was part of establishing peace under the Good Friday agreement. I also pay tribute to the doctors, firefighters, nurses, council officers, and witnesses to the troubles, including those council officers who had to find new placements for children who had lost their parents. To them, too, I say: thank you for your service. I believe that, with our amendments, this will be a balanced Bill, which is why I urge all hon. Members to vote for our amendments, to oppose those that we are resisting, and to support the Bill.
