Black History Month

Contribution

I really do hope my hon. Friend’s voice holds out for this very important debate. Historic England’s blue plaque scheme rightly recognises notable Britons, but very few of the plaques are for prominent black Britons, and even fewer can be found outside London. That is why I have applied for John Kent, believed to be Britain’s first black police officer, to have a plaque in my Carlisle constituency, where he served in the 1830s and 1840s. Does the Minister agree that plaques like that for John Kent—if I am successful—are so important in ensuring that our black history is recognised right across our country?
