Sporting Events Bill [Lords]

Contribution

I rise to speak to amendments 8 and 6, on industrial action and single sex protections respectively. The point I wish to raise goes further than this specific Bill, because I think it is a perfect case study of the purpose of the Chamber. We have a Bill that, as the hon. Member for Southend East and Rochford (Mr Alaba) articulated, has broad support across the House and is not a controversial Bill. Colleagues on both sides of the House love sport and want our country to attract major sporting events to our shores, and they see sport as a force for good in unifying communities—I very much agreed with his sentiments on that point. The Opposition have tabled two modest, reasonable and sensible amendments, one of which would simply build on the existing law and provide that if we are to use taxpayers’ money on events in the UK, they should surely comply with UK law. That is the very essence of a modest amendment. We have a consensual Bill, and the amendment simply restates the existing law and how it would apply to an international competition held in this country.
