English Devolution and Community Empowerment BillContribution
My Amendments 54, 55 and 59 are in line with the Government’s intention to give mayors flexibility on commissioner appointments. I argue that the Bill could be improved so that mayors can appoint commissioners with responsibility for more than one area of competence. For example, a mayor might wish to appoint a commissioner with responsibility for economic development and skills, given the close relationship between those areas of policy, and to enable better value for money by combining responsibilities into a single role. That is the proposal in those amendments.
