Secondly, during this period of major reforms, mayors need the flexibility and trust given to them from the Government to put the right arrangements in place for their own region. If direction of travel is towards mergers to fewer forces, the Government should surely be willing to give mayors flexibility and to appoint a single deputy mayor for more than one of their current police force areas.
