The noble Lord, Lord Shipley, raised many other valid points; for example, when a mayor resigns, everyone the mayor has appointed will lose their jobs immediately. It seems that the Government need to think a lot harder about the consequences of this quite revolutionary change to our model of local government. Quite a lot is not broken and does not need fixing, so I am very worried about how these new proposals will work out. I look forward to hearing what others have to say.
