I believe that local public accounts committees, modelled to some extent on the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee, have the potential to transform the way in which our local public sector operates by introducing stronger, more transparent and, as I said, more local accountability. They would have the merit of being simple, comprehensible and capable of being understood by local people. I also think that their very public findings would put pressure on central government departments to work better together. Would that not be a good thing?
