Combined authorities and combined county authorities already have strategic oversight over transport and local infrastructure and have experience exercising their powers in this area. For example, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has brought the Supertram network back into public control after 27 years and is already seeing drops in fare evasion, increases in usage, a ticketing app and improved cleaning. Therefore, it is imperative that transport and local infrastructure are included in the areas of competence for strategic authorities and mayors.
