The right to freedom of association is a fundamental cornerstone of our democracy, along with the right to free speech. The law does not allow wanton criminal damage in furtherance of political aims, and the lawful excuse requirements have been carefully crafted to ensure this so that it applies in the specific circumstances that I have outlined.
