Debate
Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) BillContribution
Due to the lack of scrutiny of the process, I need to ask the noble and learned Lord and the Minister some questions about involving the designated family judges. As I understand it—I use that phrase because we are not quite sure what the judicial situation is—cases of life and death decisions in the High Court are taken only by full-time High Court judges. There are, I understand, three grades of High Court judge. These decisions are made by the Court of Protection—I am looking to the noble and learned Baroness, Lady Butler-Sloss—and only the top grade of those in the Court of Protection deal with switching off life support machines and Charlie Gard-type situations.
